Why a metal grille gate needs a purpose-built digital lock

The digital locks most people picture are mortise locks. The mechanism sits inside the body of a solid door at least 40mm thick, and the handle or push-pull body on either side connects through it. A metal grille gate has none of that. The frame is hollow, the bars are thin, and there is no door body to house a mortise. A lock made for a wooden door has nowhere to go.

Choosing by condo layout

A corridor-facing grille gate on a standard unit. If the gate is your only barrier before the main door and you mainly want to stop carrying a gate key, the R8GD does the job without asking you to think about WiFi coverage in the corridor. Fingerprint in, fingerprint out, PIN or card for everyone else.

A grille gate plus a main door, both to be secured. This is the most common condo setup and the one where dual unlock earns its keep. Households with domestic helpers, elderly parents, children or tenants. Face recognition on the R9KFV means an elderly parent or a child with full hands walks up and the gate opens. Before you order: what to check

Management approval. Some condo managements ask residents to get approval before changing anything on a corridor-facing gate. Check your house rules before the installation date so the appointment is not wasted.

WiFi at the gate (R9KFV only). The R9KFV’s app features depend on your home WiFi reaching the gate. A corridor gate is often on the far side of a wall from the router. The installer can test signal strength at the gate during setup.

Your power routine. The R8GD needs a set of AA batteries kept in a drawer. The R9KFV uses a lithium rechargeable battery and requires charging once every three to four months. Neither is difficult; they are just different, and it is worth knowing which you prefer before you choose.

Battery life and emergency access at the gate

Power draw is the first thing people ask about once a camera is involved, so it is worth being direct.

The R9KFV asks more of its battery than a basic gate lock. Face recognition, an always-on WiFi connection and a camera watching the corridor all draw power, and the lock is rated for three to four months per charge. The battery is a high-capacity rechargeable lithium unit, so there is no set of disposables to replace and nothing to send to landfill every few months. Can you put a digital lock on a metal gate?
